“Feeling Energetic” – Here’s a few local hikes you may want to try . . . . . 

1.2 miles – (approx. 1 hr, 30 min) : elevation 2526’  “Sugarloaf  Trail” – Trail starts 1 mile up Zealand Road at bridge over Zealand river. Hiking through open hardwoods, the trail splits between Middle and North Sugarloaf. Bear left to Middle Sugarloaf for fantastic views.

1.4 miles – (approx. 1 hr, 10 min) : elevation 2804’  “Mt.Willard  Trail” – Trail starts at the end of Crawford House railroad station opposite Saco Lake. An easy grade up an old carriage road leads to a spectacular view of Crawford Notch.

1.4 miles – (approx. 45 min) : “Bridle Path – Upper Ammonoosuc Falls” – Start at the Mt. Washington Hotel tennis courts, the path follows the river through the evergreen forest and joins an old railroad bed which leads to the falls. This series of cascades through a narrow gorge is one of the area’s most interesting natural features.

2.4 miles – (approx. 2 hrs, 40 min) : elevation 5715’  “Mt.Jefferson Trail” – Trail starts at height of land on Jefferson Notch Road and ascends the west slope of Mt. Jefferson. Timberline is reached in just ½ hr. From there, steep grade and rocky terrain lead to a panoramic view of North Presidential Range.


2.5 miles – (approx. 2 hrs, 15 min) : elevation 3910’  “Webster-Jackson Trail to Mt.Webster”
– Trail begins behind road camp by Saco lake in Crawford Notch. The steepness of this trail varies as it skirts the top of Webster Cliff. Breathtaking view of Crawford Notch.


2.5 miles – (approx. 2 hrs, 45 min) : elevation 5050’  “Lake of the Clouds – Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail” – Trail starts at Cog Railway base station. Following the Ammonoosuc River the trail passes the base of the ammonoosuc ravine, then the steep trail ascends to the lakes. From here you can continue from the lakes to the Mt.Washington summit.

2.7 miles – (approx. 1 hr, 30 min) : “Zealand Valley Trail” – Starting at the end of Zealand road, the trail rises gently on an old railroad bed leading to open meadows teeming with wildlife. At the far end of the valley is Zealand pond, Zealand falls and the AMC Zealand falls hut.

3.2 miles – (approx. 2 hrs, 40 min) : elevation 4761’  “Mt.Eisenhower – Edmand’s Path” – Trail leads from the east side of Mt.Clinton road to the summit of Mt.Eisenhower. An excellent view of Bretton Woods valley. One of the easier trails up onto the Presidential Range.

4.6 miles – (approx. 3 hrs, 55 min) : elevation 6288’  “Mt.Washington – Jewell Trail” – Trail begins at the Cog railway base station. Winding and zig-zagging through rugged forest, the trail works it’s way up to the North shoulder of Mt. Washington and from there on to the summit. Alpine shrubs and flowers. At the summit there is a cafeteria, gift shop, post office and museum.


5.4 miles – (approx. 3 hrs, 10 min) : elevation 3554’  “Cherry Mountain – Black Brook Trail” – Trail begins ½ mile west of living waters campground on Route 302. Trail passes through hardwood forest. Summit offers beautiful view of Presidential Range.

8.2 miles – (approx. 6 hrs) : “Mt.Washington – Crawford Path” – Trail begins directly across from the former site of the Crawford House on Route 302. A more demanding hike offering rewarding views. The trail crosses the entire Southern Presidential Range. 5 miles of this trail lies above the timberline.

Fall Foliage Drives:


Route 118 in Warren to Route 112 into Woodstock is a beautiful drive with lots of overlooks. Then you can either go Route 3 north into Franconia  Notch or stay on Route 112 (Kancamangus Highway) into North Conway. There’s always a good chance of seeing Moose on Route 118, and again on Route 112.


Route 145 from Colebrook to Pittsburg, then Route 3 to the Canadian Border offers a spectacular view of the fall colors in the northern reaches of New Hampshire. This stretch of Route 3 is more commonly known as "moose alley" and chances are pretty good you will see one of these marvelous creatures grazing along side of the road.


Route 26 through the Dixville Notch includes a great show of fall colors and beautiful scenery.


Take Route 16 in Pinkham Notch to Berlin to Route 110 North in Groveton to Route 3 South into Lancaster then onto Route 2 east to Gorham. This drive includes some great views of the northern Presidential Mountains.


Route 142 from Bethlehem to Franconia to Route 117 from Franconia to Sugar Hill has some of the greatest color in the state.
 


Route 118 takes you along the hills of Mount Moosilauke. Take Exit 32 off interstate 93 in North Woodstock and head west on Route 112. You may even see a moose or two.

Route 117 takes you through Franconia Notch and Sugar Hill. To get there, take exit 38 off I-93. Route 117 meets up with Route 302 in Lisbon. This road takes you into Bath, where there is a covered bridge that crosses the Ammonoosuc River. You can cross this bridge and drive along some of these back roads that have spectacular views of the fall foliage.

Route 116 takes you from Franconia through the Easton Valley. You can pick up this route by heading straight across the intersection once you get off I-93 at Exit 38. Route 116 intersects with Route 112. If you head west, you will go through a section of the White Mountain National Forest. This road follows the Wild Ammonoosuc River. If you head east on Route 112, you will come into Kinsman Notch. Route 112 becomes the Kancamangus Highway at the Lincoln/Woodstock town line.

Routes 142 and 302 is a winding, wooded road which ends up in Bethlehem. You can connect with this road at Exit 37 off I-93 in Franconia. Route 302 head into Littleton or over to Crawford Notch by way of Twin Mountain, past the Bretton Woods Ski Area, the Mount Washington Hotel and the road to the Cog Railway, which climbs Mount Washington.
